Platform Intelligence · Part 3 of 5

You can probably stop buying apps.

There's a lot of noise about getting our stores "AI-ready" before it's too late, and some of it is fair enough. But a lot of it is selling us things Shopify already does for us, in the background while we're busy doing something else.

So let's separate the two. What's the platform handling?

Quite a bit, as it turns out.

What Shopify's already doing

Your pages render server-side by default, which means when an AI crawler or a search bot turns up to read a page the content is sitting right there waiting for it, with no JavaScript to run first. Complex custom-built sites trip over exactly this - the bot arrives, gets handed a near-empty shell and leaves with nothing, and on Shopify you're spared all of that. You also get a robots.txt out of the box, the little instruction sheet telling crawlers what they can and can't read, four or five lines of text that almost no one has ever opened. You get a live sitemap too, kept current as you add and drop products. And you've got Sidekick sitting in your admin, happy to audit any of this if you ask it, so pop in a prompt like "are any of my pages missing title tags" and it'll go and look.

Then the newer part, and it's probably the one that matters most. Shopify has been wiring your catalogue straight into the AI tools through what they call Agentic Storefronts, and for eligible merchants it's switched on automatically. Your products, your pricing, your live inventory, all fed directly into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, with Google AI Mode and Gemini added in early 2026. You control the lot from your admin, so you can toggle a platform off or hide a product if you want to. It's still rolling out at time of writing, so go and check what's live for you.

I'll say that part again, because it's the bit most of us miss. When an AI recommends products it would much rather pull from a clean, live data feed than scrape a website and hope the price is still right.

Why does that matter so much?

Because a scrape is a guess and a feed isn't, and Shopify hands the AI the feed. That's a real head start, and most of us on the platform don't know we've got it. I'm no engineer either, so I won't pretend to know how much of it is Shopify being clever and how much is Shopify getting lucky with its architecture. Either way we get the benefit, and it costs us nothing.

So what's left for us?

Five things, and no toggle fixes any of them.

One. It won't write good product data. Thin, vague, or written like ad copy, and Shopify will carry thin vague ad copy straight to the machine. That one's on us, and it's the whole of Part 5.

Two. It won't build your brand off-site. Only some of what the AI thinks about you comes from your store, and the rest comes from everywhere else, on Reddit, in reviews on platforms you don't own, in the press, in a creator's video, and no app reaches in there.

Three. It won't answer your buyers' questions for you. If your site doesn't cover sizing, materials, returns and fit clearly, the AI fills the gap from somewhere else, and that somewhere might be wrong.

Four. It won't check what AI says about you. Only you'll catch ChatGPT quoting a three-year-old review, and only if you go and look.

Five. It won't decide what you stand for. Who you're for, what you're best at, why you're worth the price. The AI rewards a clear brand because a clear brand is easier to categorise and recommend, and a muddled one confuses it the same way it confuses a customer.

The plumbing

Shopify has installed the plumbing for the AI tools and connected the pipes, and what travels down those pipes is on you. Your product data, your brand, your answers, your clarity. The plumbing's done. The pipes are connected. The rest is yours.

And I find that more than a little reassuring, because the hard human valuable part is the part you control, and the tedious technical part's now taken off your plate. That's the kind of trade I'd take any day.

Three jobs for this week

Find your Agentic Storefronts settings in the admin and check which platforms your catalogue is feeding.

Ask Sidekick to audit your top ten product pages for missing titles and thin information.

Then run the brand test and notice the gap between what Shopify is feeding the AI and what the AI says about you from everywhere else.

That gap is your real to-do list. How big is yours?
